Description
A vigorous grower and showpiece in the summer landscape, ‘Violet Satin’ Rose of Sharon features an abundance of large and stunning violet-pink flowers during the heat of summer, when we need soothing colors in the garden. Growing up to 10 feet in height and 6 feet feet wide, Violet Satin can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive and colorful small tree. The hummingbirds and butterflies will thank you for planting this one!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall with a spread to about 6 feet, Blue Satin Rose of Sharon is ideal for use as a large shrub or small tree. We think Rose of Sharon are most useful in the landscape as a focal point specimen. That said, they are also nice grouped or used as attractive and colorful hedges in landscape borders. Remove lower branches from your Rose of Sharon and you have a stunning small tree that fits perfectly in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, around patios and other outdoor living spaces, or just about anywhere in the sunny landscape. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, tropical look gardens, cottage gardens and purple theme gardens.
Spacing: 4′ for solid hedge; 10′ for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Rose of Sharon are easy to grow and maintain in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine. Some shade will be tolerated but flowering won’t be as heavy and plants may be leggier and tend to flop. We suggest a minimum of 5 hours direct sunlight per day. Maintenance is minimal requiring little or no pruning and plants are quite drought tolerant when established.
