Description
This upright multi-stemmed native flowering shrub has it all!…fruit for the birds and people, nectar for butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, cover for wildlife, and multi-season beauty. It’s also highly adaptable thriving in full sun or part shade, wet or dry soils, heat and cold down to -25F, which makes it an exceptionally easy plant to grow. In spring you and the pollinators will enjoy the abundant clusters of pretty white to soft pink flowers. The glossy green leaves turn outstanding shades of red and orange. Abundant clusters of brilliant red pear-shaped berries appear in fall persisting through winter. The tart berries can be picked and eaten right off the bush and are also used in canning or making jams and jellies.
NOTE: As with all of our other plants and trees, all of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet wide or more, the Red Chokeberry is ideal for use along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders and other natural areas. With annual pruning done in late winter it forms a dense shrub suitable for landscape borders. A fine addition to the edible landscape, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens and white or red theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
Aronia plants grow best in an acidic, organically rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerates periodically wet or dry soils. The more sun the better for best berry production.
