Description

With a sweet scent that is rarely found in Camellia japonica culitvars, Kramers Supreme produces an abundance of large, fully double peony-form flowers with ruffled turkey-red petals and cute yellow stamens peeking out between. It has a long flowering season lasting for months from mid-winter into spring during a time when we need color in the landscape the most. The flowers are perfect for cutting and use in indoor flower arrangements or float just one in a bowl of water.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Kramers Supreme Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders and is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, Asian gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and in woodland gardens and borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who live and garden above USDA Zone 7a, where this camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone

Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

I bought this camellia as a focal point for my flower bed on the side of my home. It arrived in excellent condition. It has been in the ground for about two weeks and has already started growing new leaves. I found this fragrant and brightly colored camellia when looking for something to grow in this area, for a design class. I was delighted to find that Wilson brothers carried it, as I’m from Georgia. I was very worried after I ordered them in reality, because of multiple exceptions by the delivery service, who had the plants on the truck several times but they were never delivered. I contacted Wilson brothers, who indicated they water things very well, and told me how they pack them. I was further worried when the package was finally delivered, on day nine (whew!) and was upside down on my doorstep. Some of the potting soil had fallen out, but most was in place. Soil was still moist, the leaves seemed mostly OK, and the plants very quickly recovered when I put them in the ground. By 10 days later, they look fine! I can’t wait to see this beauty!
