Description
An improved Hydrangea arborescens, Invincibelle Sublime is a new twist on the North American native Smooth Hydrangea featuring full-sized cloud-like flower clusters that float just above the foliage continuously from early summer well into fall. The sturdy stems make them excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. With a fresh and intriguing look in the garden, each flower in the cluster is a saturated tourmaline-green that stands out beautifully against dark green to blue-green foliage on a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Invincible Sublime is excellent as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a colorful natural hedge in larger landscape borders. This selection is also incredibly cold hardy withstanding temperatures down to -40F in USDA Zone 3 and as far south as 9b, we hear. Being a North American native species, Smooth Hydrangea are some of if not the easiest to grow in the U.S..
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, Invincibelle Sublime Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cutting gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Invincibelle Sublime Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to part shade in cooler northern zones 3 to 6 and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in warmer southern zones 7 to 9b. That said, for the most blooms and the sturdiest stems we suggest at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, preferably in the morning and late afternoon and evening. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic.
Pruning Tip: In early spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge on the stems, cut the plant back by about one-third its height. That’s it!
